Quick answer
A bidet can replace wiping while hemorrhoids are sore, if the water pressure stays low. Studies of daily bidet users did not find more new hemorrhoids, but a hard spray can irritate skin. For a raw flare-up, start with a warm-water rinse bottle. For everyday use at home, a simple non-electric attachment is enough.

Key takeaways
- Japanese follow-up studies did not find a higher rate of new hemorrhoid diagnoses among people who used bidet toilets regularly. People who already had hemorrhoids were more likely to be using one.
- Pressure is the risk. Men who used a bidet often were more likely to report new irritated skin around the anus, and a clinical review ties heavy use to itching and, in people who already leak stool, to worse control.
- The LUXE NEO 120 is the attachment with the deepest buyer record: simple install, no power, cold water, and a stream some people find too strong until they turn it down.
- The TUSHY Classic 3.0 adds a nozzle you can aim. The Frida Mom peri bottle is the portable option, and the only one of the three you can fill with warm water.
- After hemorrhoid surgery, a lower-force electronic bidet did not beat warm sitz baths for pain at one week, and the trial did not prove it was equal either.
On this page
A bidet helps hemorrhoids when it lets you stop scraping sore skin with dry paper. It does not shrink the swelling. The useful version is a soft stream, long enough to rinse, then a pat dry. A hard stream is how a helpful tool becomes the thing that makes itching worse.
If you can install hardware, the LUXE NEO 120 is the attachment buyers stick with. If you need to aim, the TUSHY Classic 3.0 adds a nozzle you can angle. If the skin is raw, you are traveling, or you are in the weeks after birth, the Frida Mom peri bottle is the better tool because the water can be warm.
The studies behind that advice, and the pressure mistakes worth avoiding, are below. For a shorter walk-through of the research, see is a bidet good for hemorrhoids?
What bidet studies actually found
Electric bidet toilets are common in Japan, which is where the largest user studies were done. They are not the same machine as a cold-water attachment under an American toilet seat, but they are the evidence we have on washing with a spray instead of paper.
In a one-year web survey of 7,637 adults, people who already used a bidet were more likely to report hemorrhoids at the start. Over the year, new hemorrhoid diagnoses were not clearly more common in users than in non-users. The same pattern held for most urinary and genital symptoms. One exception was symptoms of bacterial vaginitis, where the adjusted incidence odds ratio was 2.66, and the authors said the numbers were too small to settle the question. Their reading of the hemorrhoid finding was reverse causation: hemorrhoids lead people to the bidet, not the other way around 1.
A three-year follow-up, starting from 10,305 adults, again found no significant rise in new hemorrhoids or urogenital infections with habitual use. Several problems were more common at baseline among users, which the authors also put down to reverse causation. The new finding was skin. Among men, habitual users were more likely to report irritated skin around the anus that started during follow-up (adjusted risk ratio 1.36, 95% confidence interval 1.06 to 1.75) 2.
One trial did test a bidet as care after hemorrhoid surgery. The BIDLOW study randomly assigned people to a lower-force electronic bidet or to warm sitz baths for 7 days after hemorrhoidectomy. Pain scores on day 7 were 38.3 in the bidet group and 42.0 in the bath group, which was not a statistical difference. Twenty-six people dropped out after randomization, and the final numbers were 34 and 41. The upper bound of the bidet group’s confidence interval sat above the line the authors had set for “as good as a bath,” so noninferiority was not shown 4. A gentler spray did not look harmful in that week. It also was not proven to replace the soak.

A separate review of electric bidet toilets says washing can add comfort and may help constipation for some users, and that too much washing can cause anal itching and can worsen anal incontinence. The advice in that paper is specific: if you have itching, cut back on cleaning; if you leak stool, stop the bidet 5. A clinic series of 49 people with incontinence who used electric bidets found their severity scores fell after they stopped, from a median of 15 to a median of 10 on the fecal incontinence severity index, over a median of 4 weeks 6. That does not mean a bidet causes leakage in everyone. It means that if leakage is already a problem, the spray is a suspect worth removing.
Our picks compared

Reviews of our picks
Awards here are about fit, not about a score no one else can see. The LUXE is the default home attachment. The TUSHY is the one you can aim. The peri bottle is what you use when a cold stream is a bad idea.
LUXE Bidet NEO 120
Best for: A permanent switch from wiping to rinsing
Buyers call the install straightforward, often about 15 minutes, and say they feel cleaner with less paper. It suits a permanent switch on the toilet you use every day. Turn the knob only partway at first: pressure is the complaint that splits reviews, the water is cold, and some knobs fail after a few years.
What recent buyers say
Buyers call it a life-changing purchase and say installation takes about 15 minutes. It cuts toilet paper use and leaves people feeling cleaner. Water pressure splits opinion, since some find it too strong, and knobs on some units break after a few years. It is cold water only, which a few people miss.
What buyers like
- Easy to install
- Feels much cleaner than paper
- Pays for itself in toilet paper
Common complaints
- Pressure can be too strong
- Knobs can break over time
- Cold water only
Skip it if your skin is very raw right now. Start on the lowest setting, or use a peri bottle with warm water.
TUSHY Classic 3.0 Bidet Attachment
Best for: People who want to aim the spray
The adjustable nozzle is the feature that earns this a place next to the simpler LUXE. It suits someone who wants to point the water and cares how the hardware looks. Some buyers find the pressure weak, and others report splashing or a unit that quit within a year.
What recent buyers say
Buyers find it easy to install and effective, and they like the look. Opinions on pressure run from fine to weak, some report water splashing, and a few had units fail within a year.
What buyers like
- Easy to install
- Adjustable nozzle angle
- Looks good in the bathroom
Common complaints
- Pressure feels weak to some
- Occasional leaks or splashing
- Some fail within a year
Frida Mom Upside Down Peri Bottle
Best for: Rinsing instead of wiping, at home or on the go
The angled neck lets you rinse with warm water you control, at home or in a bag. It suits raw skin, the weeks after birth, and any bathroom where you cannot install hardware. Leaks show up in reviews, and 10 ounces is not much water if you rinse twice.
What recent buyers say
This year's reviews come from new mothers and from people healing after procedures, and both groups call it indispensable. The angle is the feature everyone mentions. Some report leaks, one found it noisy, and others wish it held more water.
What buyers like
- Angled neck reaches easily
- Gentle, easy-to-control spray
- Packs into a bag or pocket
Common complaints
- Can leak
- Holds only 10 ounces
How we chose these bidets for hemorrhoids
We looked for listings with strong overall ratings from a large number of buyers, then read recent reviews for the comments that repeat: install time, feeling cleaner, toilet paper use, and water pressure. Pressure is the comment that decided the ranking. The LUXE has the largest review record of any attachment we considered, and the recurring complaint is a stream that feels too strong. The TUSHY has a smaller record and the opposite complaint, a stream that feels weak, plus the nozzle control that makes aiming possible. We kept the peri bottle, even though it is not a plumbed bidet, because raw skin and travel are the situations where an attachment is the wrong tool. The research we set next to those reviews is the user studies and the surgery trial above, not a claim that any brand treats hemorrhoids.
Why low pressure matters more than the brand
Hemorrhoid skin is thin and already swollen. A household water line can put out more force than a sore spot can stand. The Japanese finding of more irritated skin in men who used bidets often is the study version of what buyers say when they call a spray “too intense” 2. The surgery trial deliberately used a lower-force stream, and even then it only showed similar pain scores, not a clear win 4.
The NHS piles page says to keep the area clean and dry and to pat rather than rub 7. MedlinePlus says to avoid perfumed or colored toilet tissue and to sit in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes when you want comfort 8. The NIDDK lists warm sitz baths several times a day with fiber, fluids, and less straining 9. A bidet is one way to do the cleaning step. It is not a substitute for the fiber or the shorter sit. Those habits are in toilet habits that help hemorrhoids.
Cold water is the other limit of both attachments. Neither needs power, and neither heats the water. In a small study, a warm bath relaxed the internal anal sphincter, and pain relief lasted longer after warmer soaks 10. That was a bath, held for 10 minutes at controlled temperatures, not a cold rinse. It is still a fair reason to avoid a cold blast on the day the skin is most inflamed. Fill the peri bottle with warm water instead. Our spray and rinse bottle page compares that bottle with these same attachments and with a postpartum mist.
How to choose
| You need | Pick |
|---|---|
| A bidet on the toilet you use every day | LUXE Bidet NEO 120, lowest comfortable setting |
| Control over where the water hits | TUSHY Classic 3.0 |
| Warm water, travel, or very raw skin | Frida Mom peri bottle |
| A soak, not a spray | A basin sitz bath, 10 to 15 minutes |
The LUXE is the best overall attachment because buyers describe a simple install, a cleaner result than paper, and hardware that many of them keep for years. The tradeoffs are real. Water pressure divides reviews. Knobs break on some units after a few years. There is no warm-water option. If your skin is very raw this week, the product note on that listing is the right one: start at the lowest setting, or use the peri bottle until the sting settles.
The TUSHY is the pick when the LUXE’s fixed spray misses the spot you care about. Buyers like the install and the look. Pressure complaints run toward “too weak” rather than “too strong,” which can be a safer failure mode during a flare-up, as long as you can still rinse off stool. Splashing and leaks show up often enough to plan for a towel on the first tries. A minority of buyers had units fail within a year, so keep the receipt.
The peri bottle is the portable option and the warm-water option. The angled neck is what buyers mention, including new mothers and people recovering from procedures. It fits in a bag. It can leak, and 10 ounces goes quickly. Use it in bathrooms where you cannot attach hardware, and during the worst days of a flare-up. After a vaginal birth it is also the rinse most people are sent home expecting to do. See postpartum hemorrhoids for the rest of that first month.
Skip a new bidet, and call the surgeon, if you are in the first days after hemorrhoidectomy and nobody has told you water is allowed. The BIDLOW trial is not a permission slip for every operation 4. Skip the bidet entirely if you already leak stool or mucus, at least until a clinician has weighed the clinic findings above 56. Shared bidet nozzles in hospitals can carry bacteria, which is a reason that review tells higher-risk patients to be careful with shared machines 5. A home attachment used by one household is a different setting.
If you still want something for the seat while this settles, a footstool changes posture and a cushion changes pressure. Those are separate buys: toilet stools and the fast relief plan for the next two days. Moist wipes are the fallback when you cannot rinse. See the best hemorrhoid wipes.
How to use a bidet when the skin is sore
- On the first uses, sit normally and open the control a crack. Find the spot with the least water that still rinses stool away.
- Spray for a few seconds. You are replacing the wipe, not taking a shower.
- Pat dry with a soft cloth or plain tissue. Rubbing undoes the point of the rinse. The NHS line is pat, rather than rub 7.
- If the water is cold enough to make you tense, stop and use the peri bottle with warm water for the rest of this flare-up.
- Wash your hands. The bidet does not remove the need for that.
- Keep the rest of the home plan going: a warm soak of about 10 to 15 minutes if it feels good 8, more fiber and fluids, and less time on the toilet 9. Family doctors still list those steps, plus stool softeners and store creams, as the start of care 12.

Give the low setting a few days before you decide the bidet “does not work.” The job in week one is less rubbing, not a smaller lump. If itching climbs instead, shorten the spray and drop the pressure again. If nothing about the soreness has changed after a week of gentler cleaning, softer stools, and soaks, the next step is a clinician, not a stronger nozzle. NIDDK suggests checking back when home products have not helped after about a week 9.
A bidet also will not fix the reason many flare-ups return. Straining and long sits are covered in how to prevent hemorrhoids. The full range of treatment, from home care to procedures, is on the hemorrhoid treatment page. A soak in a basin is a different tool from a spray: time, warm water, and no pressure. Instructions are in how to take a sitz bath.
When to see a doctor instead
Use the bidet for cleaning. Do not use it to wait out symptoms that need an exam.
Screening for colorectal cancer is recommended from age 45, so rectal bleeding in that age group needs more than a hardware upgrade 11. Severe pain with bleeding, fever, or diarrhea is on the NIDDK list of reasons to get care right away 9. What the visit is for is spelled out in when to see a doctor for hemorrhoids.
If the stream caused a split in the skin or a burning pain that is worse than the hemorrhoid was, stop the bidet. Case reports collected in the 2022 review include burns and fissures from habitual high-force use 3. That is uncommon. It is also avoidable by staying on a low setting and keeping the spray short.
Frequently asked questions
Will a bidet make hemorrhoids worse?
Daily use has not been linked to more new hemorrhoid diagnoses in the Japanese follow-up surveys. A hard stream is a different issue. It can leave the skin more irritated, especially if you spray for a long time. Start low, and stop if itching gets worse.
Do I still need toilet paper with a bidet?
Most people still pat dry. Use a soft cloth or a little plain tissue, and do not rub. The bidet replaces the wiping that does the cleaning. It does not replace drying. Perfumed paper is the kind most likely to sting afterward.
Can I install a non-electric bidet on any toilet?
These attachments sit between the bowl and the seat and connect to the toilet's water line. Buyers of both attachments usually describe a short install with the parts in the box. A one-piece toilet or a very tight shutoff valve can make that harder, so check the fit before you commit.
Is a portable bottle as good as a bidet attachment?
For a sore flare-up, the bottle is often better, because you can use warm water and a soft squeeze. The attachment wins for habit, because it is there every time and you are more likely to skip the dry wipe. Many people use the bottle until the skin calms, then the attachment.
Should I use a bidet after hemorrhoid surgery?
Ask the surgeon first. In one trial after hemorrhoidectomy, pain scores at 7 days were similar for a lower-force electronic bidet and warm sitz baths, but the study did not prove the bidet matched the bath. A gentle rinse is reasonable only if your own surgical instructions allow water.
